Pre-production and Filming:
During January 2002, Art Director
Joe Pacutho designed and constructed the health centre
interior in a large conference room in Jinja, and
built the exterior of Konaweeka Health Centre on the
back of the DISH II Project Jinja office. Also during
this time, the project hired all the regular actors
and actresses for the series, signed up production
trainees and hired other necessary Ugandan and Kenyan
production talent, set up a production office in Jinja,
made arrangements to house and feed cast and crew
during the 3 months of filming, and collected props,
costumes, equipment, and supplies. Mediae Trust purchased
and hired camera, sound and lighting equipment and
contracted 2 directors, a cameraman, a soundman, and
a composer from the U.K., and a costume designer from
Kenya to produce the series and train Ugandan talent.
Filming began on 15 February 2002, and continued through
7 May 2002, in Jinja. The first two programmes were
filmed in 6 days each; thereafter, all programmes
were scheduled for 5 days. Each programme was edited
in Jinja during the week after filming. The Directors
alternated between programmes in the series. The project
used two offline editing suites.
The DISH II Project pretested the off-line edits of
each programme among panels of television viewers
and fed back comments and suggested changes to the
Directors and editor-in-training.
Post-production
In late April, accomplished British soundtrack composer
Simon Brint worked with two Ugandan songwriters in
Uganda to compose the theme song and soundtrack for
the series. Online editing and laying down soundtracks
was done in London during May.
The series will broadcast regionally in Africa in
October 2002.
